Allergies, hands down, suck. It’s bad enough with everyone else around you coughing and sneezing this time of year. You don’t need to spend the most wonderful time of the year feeling miserable or relying on medication.

Did you know that bringing a live Christmas tree into your home can make your allergies worse? If you suffer from pollen allergies, you’re in serious trouble. Prelit Artificial Christmas trees can be better for your health than a live Christmas tree because they are pollen-free!

Also, live trees that do not come from a quality retailer can contain mold and/or fungi—a pure nightmare for your respiratory system. Because most Christmas trees are cut well before the holidays, they can contain quite a bit of mold, which will increase significantly when brought into your house. Although rarer, some can release mold spores when they drop their needles. If you or any of your family members suffer from asthma, this could be deadly!

However, customers should know that artificial trees can still carry allergens if they are caked in dust. This is easy to clean by shaking out the pieces or vacuuming the branches using the upholstery bristle brush. You can also fill a bucket with warm soapy water and wipe down the tree with a dust cloth. Cleaning the tree before storing it and after taking it out of storage will significantly decrease the dust accumulation.

It is far more difficult for a pre-lit artificial Christmas tree to contain mold or fungi. However, there is still a slight chance it could happen if the tree is stored improperly. To get the best results, be sure to store your tree in a plastic bag. Many retailers sell storage bags separately, but if you buy these, you won’t have to worry about making it fit. Store your tree in a cool, dry place. If exposed to heat, artificial trees can lose their color or even melt!

Be sure to remove all decorations from your tree before storing, because not only can they can crush the branches while in storage, but, like we previously mentioned, you’ll need to clean your tree before storing and before setting up as well. Prevention is critical when it comes to being allergy-free!
